Seahorse celebrates one of the ocean’s most fascinating little creatures, where it is the male who carries the eggs and is ‘pregnant’ for several weeks before the babies are born. It is hand-painted in water-based paint on masi by Sigavou Studios.
Fijian masi, or barkcloth, is made by village women on islands such as Vatulele. It is a renewable material, harvested in strips from paper-mulberry trees, then pounded, soaked and stretched over several days. Each piece carries skills passed down through generations.
