When ten-year-old Zia hears her aunt call her ‘kaluti’ and is kept from playing with her cousin Rani, she is confused and hurt. Worried but determined, she sets off to understand what the word means and why it has anything to do with her, on a journey to discover what makes her enough and to fall in love with the skin she is in.
Written by Shazia Usman, Kaluti gently addresses colourism, a form of discrimination faced by millions of brown and black people, especially women and girls, around the world. By making Zia’s aunt the bully, the author shows how discrimination within the family can be confronted constructively, in ways that keep the child safe and prompt adults to check their own attitudes. It is a story that helps Indo-Fijian and brown girls see themselves reflected on the page.
