Fish of Fiji was inspired by a fish named after the islands, the Fiji Devil, a bright blue damsel fish seen darting about rock pools and coral. It is hand-painted in water-based paint on barkcloth by Sigavou Studios.
Fijian masi, or barkcloth, is made by village women on islands such as Vatulele. It is a renewable material, harvested in strips from paper-mulberry trees, then pounded, soaked and stretched over several days. Each piece carries skills passed down through generations.
