'Vonu' is the Fijian word for turtle. This hand-painted turtle bookmark, made from traditional Fijian barkcloth or 'masi' comes in 5 colours.
Fijian ‘masi’ is produced by village women on islands such as Vatulele. A renewable resource, masi is made by harvesting strips of bark from specially grown paper-mulberry trees. Each piece takes days to process, involving repeated pounding, soaking and stretching. These traditional skills are passed on from generation to generation, with certain clans being considered the experts in masi-making. The uneven quality of the masi reflects its handmade origin.
Masi bookmark is mounted on black card, which can be gently removed from backing when ready to use.

Tall palms bend as the night wind tosses their branches, their long fronds whipping and rustling like cascades of silver ribbons. Light of the new moon catches on the waves as they swell and recede in endless rhythm: the breathing of mother nature. Overhead, millions of stars pinpoint the darkness, adding their magic to the night on the beach that inspired this painting.

Maria Rova lives in Nadi, Fiji. The artist wishes to acknowledge gratefully the impact that her Fijian family has had on her work.

Fiji-Baat is a Children's book about inter-generational connection, migration, settlement, assimilation, language, identity, and diasporic journeys of homecoming.
Fiji-Baat translates as Fiji-Talk. It is predominantly spoken by the Indo-Fijian population and the people of this diaspora. Other terms such as Fiji-Hindi, Fiji-Hindustani, Hindustani-Baat or simply Hindustani are also used.
Fiji-Baat is the story of an 8-year-old boy who is from Australia. His Mum is Indian-Fijian, and his Dad is Scottish. He accompanies his mother on a trip to see his Nana (grandfather) for Christmas. The young boy arrives in Fiji thinking that his Nana can barely speak English but is surprised to learn the opposite. The grandson and his grandfather then begin a journey of teaching and learning from each other.
Nana comes and sits next to him when he is using his iPad. He asks what his 8-year-old grandson is doing. Once he understands, he mentions that their computer isn’t working and that he used to send emails to his friends who live overseas. Nana is then shown how to send emails from an iPad. They talk about their ancestry and Nana starts teaching his grandson some words in Fiji-Hindustani (also known as Fiji-Baat). The young boy leaves his iPad with his grandfather.
Upon his return to Sydney, he sees an email from Nana who continues to teach him Fiji-Baat with the iPad. The story ends with the young boy saying that he and his Nana now talk weekly, suggesting that they are better connected and that he is learning more about his identity.
About the language - Fiji-Baat/ Fiji-Hindi/ Fiji-Hindustani/ Hindustani-Baat/ Hindustani
The language is the product of influences from other languages that have existed since the Girmit period.
Girmit refers to the ‘Agreement’ made between an Indian Indentured Labourer and the British Government. The labourers, known as the Girmitya’s or Coolie’s, were brought from India. They served for a period of five years. This systematic slavery, came to an end about a hundred years ago. Of the 60,000 labourers that were brought, the majority opted to stay back in Fiji and started a lineage of people called Indo-Fijians.

Fiji’s national flower, the legendary Tagimoucia, is said to have sprouted from the tears of a tribal princess who had fled her island village rather than be forced to marry a chief she did not love. This beautiful creeper, with its festoons of bright red and white flowers, grows only on the isolated slopes of extinct volcanoes in northern Fiji. The spiral wave motifs have been drawn with coral sand brought home from one of Fiji’s palm-fringed beaches.

Mystery surrounds the arrival of Iguanas in Fiji, for these creatures are closely related to the jungle Iguanas of Central America. Could they, or their eggs, have floated across the Pacific on rafts of vegetation in a bygone age? Today, as they struggle to survive encroaching civilization and imported predators, Iguanas have become favoured symbols of Fiji native wildlife.

The Mangrove People Illustrated Children's Book
Fiji Children's book, written and illustrated by Sharon Light. The 5th book in the series. The Mangrove people must find a new home as humans are destroying their mangrove forests. An adventure but dangerous journey for these little mangrove creatures.
Many people think of the mangrove as a swampy, smelly place but it is very important and lots of creatures live there.
Crabs, fish, prawns and shellfish shelter in the roots and various birds, insects and orchids dwell in the upper branches.
It is in the mangrove that baby fish live protected by the roots until they become adults and are able to swim out into the big sea.
This is a story of one little group of mangrove dwellers.
About Sharon Light
Sharon has spent the last 15 years painting apparel, since mid 2003 she has concentrated on paintings. Keen on fishing and diving, currently holding the World Record (women) for great barracuda. Sharon Light is a descendant of a settler family that arrived in Fiji in 1869 to grow cotton in Ra.

Elegant natural necklace made out of Fijian Coconut shell
This elegant necklace is hand-made by Rako Pasefika out of Fijian coconut shell sourced from the island of Rotuma. Using naturally abundant Coconuts, each mini-button is individually shaped out of coconut shell to just the right size, before being drilled to create the perfect incision. The coconut buttons are strung together using cotton fiber chord which is hand-woven.
Each of the 30 buttons is just over 1cm in diameter, with each piece being woven together to form the intricate design. There are three rows of coconuts with 5cm of chord either side before the coconut section starts. This is a delicate piece which sits close to the neck, similar to a choker necklace.
Customs-friendly jewellery
Rako Pasefika have carefully designed their stunning pieces to ensure that the natural materials used have no customs restrictions. Each Coconut shell has been carefully sanded, oiled and polished, meaning it has been processed and poses no customs threat.

The designs on this fish wall hanging are based on the masi/tapa design (more commonly referred to as Masi in Fiji). Because Tai is from the Lau group of islands, they call the design Tapa, a slight regional difference in name. Masi/tapa is the paper made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree. This is a standard masi design for Fijian printing.
Tapa/masi cloth designs are traditionally found in wall hangings, but Tai said 'why not incorporate them into our pottery?'. This gives the Vanua Clay pieces a unique edge; each piece is a culmination of the diverse creativity and beauty seen around Fiji by Tai and Lavenia.

When 10-year-old Zia hears her aunt call her ‘kaluti’ and stops her cousin Rani from playing with her outside, she is confused. What did the word ‘kaluti’ mean and what did it have to do with her? Was she no longer good enough to play with Rani because of it?
Worried but determined, she sets off on a mission to find out. Join Zia as she stands up to her bully, discovers what makes her ‘enough’ in this world, and falls in love with the skin she’s in.
Read pages of the book by scrolling through the images.
What is Kaluti about?
Kaluti is a derogatory term used by Fiji-Indians to describe dark-skinned people. It’s derived from the Hindi word kala, meaning black, and is commonly used among South Asian populations around the world, even in the diaspora. Fiji, despite being in the Pacific, is no exception. As colourism is a common form of discrimination faced by millions of brown and black people (especially women and girls) around the world, what Zia experiences in this story, is sadly not unique. But what is unique is how she (and her parents) handle the bullying.
“Zia’s aunt is the bully in this story and this was a deliberate choice on my part. Most of the time it’s the violence – emotional in this case – and the discrimination in the home that we don’t know how to address. It’s difficult to deal with family members. But I wanted to show how it could possibly be addressed constructively…in ways that ensures the child comes to no harm, and adults check their attitude and behaviour. I know readers will relate to Zia and identify with her challenges and her joy. She’s full of life and curiosity. When made to feel like an ‘other’, she tries to make sense of things…even goes on a journey of self-discovery to understand why she is important, why she is enough – it’s not something we want children to be forced to deal with at this age, but I think it’s important our stories reflect reality,” says author Shazia Usman.
“We don’t really have stories that reflect the lives of brown girls, of Indo-Fijian girls, and I want Kaluti to do that. This is the kind of story I would have loved to have read growing up. We need more stories that represent us and are told by us.”

This hand-painted bookmark, showing a Fijian beach at sunset, is made from traditional Fijian barkcloth or 'masi' and comes in 4 colours.

The Hibiscus is a big, red flower that grows everywhere in Fiji. It has large petals which make it ideal to hold soaps of all sizes, with a drainage hole in the centre of the flower.
This soap dish would particularly suit those who make their own soaps or prefer soaps with more unique designs, due to its larger size.
Hibiscus is also a festival in Fiji which first started in 1956. The Hibiscus Festival is held every August in Suva, with a beauty pageant and crowning of the ‘Hibiscus Queen’.

This Fiji Frog Masi painting was inspired by a recent story in our local newspaper: For the last twenty years, the Fiji Ground Frog or “Boto Ni Viti” (Platymantis vitianus) was presumed extinct as a result of the invasion of mongoose and giant toads. However, it has just been rediscovered in the dense rainforests of the Nakauvadra Range. The Boto Ni Viti, one of two native species of frogs, is a great athlete, capable of leaping and swimming at speed. The patterns on my frogs are inspired by traditional Fijian barkcloth designs.
Fijian ‘masi’, also called barkcloth, is produced by village women on islands such as Vatulele.
Maria Rova lives in Nadi, Fiji. Her artwork is inspired by the wildlife, culture, and scenery of the Pacific, especially that of the remote island of Taveuni to the north of the Fiji group, which is home to her husband’s traditional clan. Sustained by forest and reef, Taveuni villagers still follow many of the ancient cultural practices that give Fijian people their unique identity. The artist wishes to acknowledge gratefully the impact that her Fijian family has had on her work.
Framing instructions
This artwork has been left unframed for ease of shipping.
When ready to frame, simply peel the painting from its temporary backing and mount on a coloured background of your choice, leaving the rough edges of the masi showing to enhance its natural look.
