These traditional skills are passed on from generation to generation, with certain clans being considered the experts in masi-making. The uneven quality of the masi reflects its handmade origin.

"Davui" is the Fijian word for conch shell. These beautiful shells hold a significant place in Fijian culture as ceremonial items. They are used as trumpets to announce traditional events such as the anointing of a new chief. Maria Rova lives in Nadi, Fiji. Her artwork is inspired by the wildlife, culture, and scenery of the Pacific, especially that of the remote island of Taveuni to the north of the Fiji group, which is home to her husband’s traditional clan. Sustained by forest and reef, Taveuni villagers still follow many of the ancient cultural practices that give Fijian people their unique identity. The artist wishes to acknowledge gratefully the impact that her Fijian family has had on her work.

The Well Wisher Turtle is a colourful painting featuring a Fijian Turtle and flowers, painted in browns and golds on Masi.

Fijian ‘masi’, also called barkcloth, is produced by village women on islands such as Vatulele. A renewable resource, masi is made by harvesting strips of bark from specially grown paper-mulberry trees. Each piece takes days to process, involving repeated pounding, soaking and stretching. These traditional skills are passed on from generation to generation, with certain clans being considered the experts in masi-making. The uneven quality of the masi reflects its handmade origin.

Maria Rova lives in Nadi, Fiji. Her artwork is inspired by the wildlife, culture, and scenery of the Pacific, especially that of the remote island of Taveuni to the north of the Fiji group, which is home to her husband’s traditional clan. Sustained by forest and reef, Taveuni villagers still follow many of the ancient cultural practices that give Fijian people their unique identity. The artist wishes to acknowledge gratefully the impact that her Fijian family has had on her work.

The Fiji Tabua (Whale's Tooth) necklace with adjustable black string is hand cast in pewter (tin) by Albrecht Stuetzle, better know as Albi; a German born master craftsman who has made Fiji his second home. Albi served his apprentice years in Stuttgart Germany as a craftsman, specialising in hand and machine engravings, metal casting and electroplating in bronze, silver and gold.

A Tabua is a polished tooth of a sperm whale that is an important cultural item in Fijian society. They were traditionally given as gifts for atonement or esteem (called sevusevu), and were important in negotiations between rival chiefs. Today the tabua remains an important item in Fijian life. They are not sold but traded regularly as gifts in weddings, birthdays, and at funerals.

The Tabua necklace is one of Albi's unique designs in his Jewellery range, dedicated to Fiji and its people. Each piece of pewterware is hand-founded and made of fine grade pewter. 96% tin content designates it as the finest pewter available.

Albi came to Fiji in 1986 and married his wife Litia who hails from Vatukarasa Village on the Coral Coast. Operating from a small workshop behind his home in the Coral Coast, Albi has created many beautiful items including unique trophies that are awarded at major awards nights such as Fiji Excellence in Tourism, the Vodafone Fiji Open Golf Tournament and the Westpac Women in Business Excellence Awards.

Albi has produced personalised gifts for government officials as presentations to other government leaders when travelling overseas. He said that most of his creations have been given as gifts to royalty and presidential houses around the world. Hand-painted on barkcloth, using a stenciling technique learnt from traditional ‘masi kesa’ artists. ‘Ika Lailai’ means ‘little fish’ in Fijian. This painting is one of several works of art by M. W. The Hibiscus is a big, red flower that grows everywhere in Fiji. It has large petals which make it ideal to hold soaps of all sizes, with a drainage hole in the centre of the flower.

This soap dish would particularly suit those who make their own soaps or prefer soaps with more unique designs, due to its larger size.

Hibiscus is also a festival in Fiji which first started in 1956. The Hibiscus Festival is held every August in Suva, with a beauty pageant and crowning of the ‘Hibiscus Queen’.

• In the 'State' field select 'Viti Levu' for the main island, or Vanua Levu/Taveuni/ different island name as appropriate
• In the Postcode field you can put 0 or - as Fiji does not have postcodes

Fijian ‘masi’, also called barkcloth, is produced by village women on islands such as Vatulele. A renewable resource, masi is made by harvesting strips of bark from specially grown paper-mulberry trees. Each piece takes days to process, involving repeated pounding, soaking and stretching. These traditional skills are passed on from generation to generation, with certain clans being considered the experts in masi-making. The uneven quality of the masi reflects its handmade origin.

Maria Rova lives in Nadi, Fiji. Her artwork is inspired by the wildlife, culture, and scenery of the Pacific, especially that of the remote island of Taveuni to the north of the Fiji group, which is home to her husband’s traditional clan. Sustained by forest and reef, Taveuni villagers still follow many of the ancient cultural practices that give Fijian people their unique identity. The artist wishes to acknowledge gratefully the impact that her Fijian family has had on her work.
