Na Ketekete Qele: The Basket of soil
Description
Na Ketekete Qele (The basket of soil) is a compelling drama that intertwines Fijian history, culture, and myth. The story is about a Fijian god who was carrying a basket of soil that split and formed the island of Naigani. Originally produced in 2011 and curated by Dr. Apolonia Tamata, this theatrical work was directed by Apete Marayawa. The play premiered at the Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, Japan, as part of an effort to celebrate and share Fijian traditions on a global stage. Its storyline draws from the mythical creation of Naigani Island, enhanced with original vucu and serekali compositions by the cast.
The narrative unfolds with rich characters, including a king, queen, prince, village girl, and a clown who represents the prince’s alter ego. It depicts the formation of Naigani’s three iconic hills, created when the exiled village girl, carrying a basket of soil, spills it during a climactic moment. This captivating story is not only a creative reimagining but also pays homage to oral traditions from the Lomaiviti Province, particularly Natovi on Viti Levu, where inspiration for the myth was drawn.
Launched ceremoniously as an isevu (first fruits) offering to Ratu Meli Vesikula, the chief of Naisanokonoko, Verata, Tailevu, the play's cultural significance was further amplified by its subsequent performances at the Civic Auditorium in Suva. Whether you’re a cultural enthusiast or seeking a deeper connection to Fiji’s artistic heritage, Na Ketekete Qele is an enriching addition to your collection.
